Description: September 11 – 27
This series showcases the work of three artists—Oscar Micheaux, Spencer Williams and Herb Jeffries—whose work in the early part of the 20th century represents some of the first and most exciting contributions of African Americans to an American film tradition by, and for, black people. Entertaining and challenging, these works offer a stimulating contrast to mainstream, white-oriented American cinema originating in Hollywood, and an essential glimpse of early independent filmmaking.
